Cipher's Cost Datasets

The cost section has 12 datasets allowing a wide set of analysis. Simply click the cost section of your report dashboard to view all of the cost charts available in your report.

You can add any chart in cipher to a saved list of charts by selecting the tick in the top right of the chart icon as shown below. To access and then save the chart selections you've made in your report for review later on, click the 'tick' icon in the top left of your report screen and select 'save'. How does Cipher calculate cost for use in the cost datasets?

Cipher cost data is a combination of exact fees and estimated fees, taking into account all of the associated costs of obtaining and maintaining each patent, such as translation fees, foreign counsel fees, and chosen filing route.

Filing fees, examination fees, grant fees and renewal fees are exact fees based on patent office information.

Estimated fees are calculated from comprehensive cost data supplied by 80+ patent attorney firms. We make one assumption in calculating estimated fees - that everyone uses external prosecution and drafting of patents.

Please be aware that any costs are calculated from the year 2000 onwards to ensure accuracy of the data.

Here is a break down of the fees included in Cipher cost data:

Prosecution Costs

  • Drafting costs (estimated)

  • Filing fee & examination fees (exact fee based on patent office information)

  • Office Action responses (estimated)

  • Translation costs (estimated)

  • Foreign Council fees (estimated)

  • Grant fees (exact fee based on patent office information)

Renewal Costs

  • Renewal fees (exact fees based on patent office information)

We track the chosen filing routes, all office actions and all patent payment information, and can therefore accurately estimate the types of fees incurred and the size of the fees.

The charts relating to cost show either the cost to date, or future costs. To clarify:

COST TO DATE – cost incurred in the lifetime of the patent

FUTURE COSTS – total future costs for the maximum lifetime of each patent family (assuming the status of pending and granted patents within that family remain unchanged)

PROSECUTION VS RENEWAL - shows the split between prosecution and renewal costs by year.

You can then select to review all costs, or application costs and renewal costs individually related to that patent family:
