To perform a Boolean search query, its important to understand the following syntax structures:
You can find these search operators in the Cipher Advanced Search Guide located underneath the keyword search text-box.
By correctly using these operators within a search string, you can create a range of results and save time filtering out unrelated data.
Use this to combine words together in order for the search results to contain both terms.
i.e. The following search string will return patent families with both terms included within the title and/or abstract
wireless AND headphones
Use this to identify a range possibilities. The results will contain one or more of the terms included in the search string.
i.e. The following search string will return patent families with one or more of the terms included within the abstract and/or title
headphone OR earphone OR headset
Use this to exclude a term. If you have similar terms with different meanings.
i.e. The following search string will search for the term 'headphone' but not the term 'headphone splitter'
headphone NOT "headphone splitter"
The wildcard will search for terms which include the letter(s) before the asterisk.
i.e. In the example below, Cipher will return results with any instance of the word "tele" as a prefix. Therefore, some examples of results will include: television, teleport, telephone, telegraph
Including a word or phase in quotation marks will capture an exact phrase. Not using quotation marks around a combination of words will result in each word searched for separately - in other words, AND is implicit
i.e. In the example below, Cipher will return words that match the exact phrase. By excluding quotation marks, Cipher will search for headphones AND adapter AND cable
"headphones adapter cable"
Use this to separate and combine commands into one single search.
i.e. In the example below, Cipher will return results that combine headphone OR earphone OR headset with adapter
(headphone OR earphone OR headset) AND adapter
